Skin Forgiveness: A Guide To Post-Summer Damage Care
By Jean Eng
It is now mid-August and the heat and humidity of summer is beginning to fade. You may start noticing the result of your over-exposure to the sun or your neglect in protecting your skin. Take a close look at your skin and take an inventory of how the summer months have affected your complexion. If your beautiful tan reveals a shocking mass of fine lines and large pores, don’t panic! Regret may set in, but there is no time to wallow; now is the time to think of solutions. The great news is that your skin is no wimp and is very ready to forgive your summer skin sins. Keep reading to see how you can repair your post-summer skin and reverse signs of damage caused by this season of fun in the sun.
Dehydration-induced Fine Lines
Fine lines are not usually welcomed with excitement and enthusiasm. The good news is that if your fine lines are caused by dehydration, they can easily be reduced. During the summer, Pitta’s stimulating energy and heat cause our skin to lose water quickly through sweating, potentially dehydrating our skin and making fine lines appear if we have neglected to nourish our skin. To remedy this situation, use a lightweight, water-rich serum to replenish the skin’s moisture levels. Some of my favourites are Pure + simple’s Collagen Elastin Plus serum and the Minimalist Face Lift Serum. These serums are rich in hydrating, nourishing ingredients and are targeted towards anti-aging, so they stimulate the skin’s collagen production and improve its overall health. Don’t forget to always follow with a nourishing moisturizing routine to lock in your serum and keep your skin protected all day long. Holistic Vanity’s Brightening Hyaluronic Lotion is a great super-hydrating lotion that contains Hyaluronic Acid, an ingredient that can hold 1000 times its own weight in water. This medium-weight lotion is designed to effectively soothe, brighten, and protect damaged skin. If anti-aging is also a concern, consider the Minimalist Face Cream. It is enriched with Organic Safflower Oleosomes, which nourish and protect the skin, as well as Watermelon extract which repairs sun-damage and gives this moisturizer its anti-aging properties. You can also consider an IPL Photo Facial to reduce the signs of sun damage and premature aging.
Sun Spots
Sun spots can be difficult and frustrating to treat but can definitely be improved over time. The key is to be patient with your skin. After all, these sun spots didn’t occur in a day, so it will take a little time to help them fade too. To lighten hyperpigmentation and sun spots, my go-to regimen includes layering products with regenerating and nourishing ingredients like Rosehip, Seabuckthorn Berry, and Vitamin C. A good place to start is a results-focused pigmentation-fading oil. Pure + simple’s Organic Rosehip Oil, Holistic Vanity’s Argan Oil, and Holistic Vanity’s Regenerating Seabuckthorn Berry Oil are especially great choices as they are all known for their skin-brightening and rejuvenating properties. If you love the skin-brightening effects of Rosehip Oil, you might like Holistic Vanity’s Repairing Rosehip Tonic as well. It is a hydrating toner that helps to fade pigmentation. Besides layering on the protective and regenerative skincare, a series of facial treatments such as the Sea Salt Microdermabrasion and Aquabrasion will also help if you’re looking to speed things up, as they exfoliate the skin and promote cell renewal while restoring much-needed moisture.
Leathery Orange Peel-textured Skin
Inflammation and dehydration are the main causes of leather-textured skin. To avoid this, refrain from sunbathing in direct sunlight for long periods of time, and always be diligent with sun protection. Proper after-sun care is crucial to prevent sunburn-induced peeling of the skin. If you are looking to smooth and moisturize leather-textured skin, it’s important to use gentle non-foaming cleansers. Creamy cleansers work better for after-sun cleansing as they are more hydrating and soothing compared to foaming gel cleansers. The Holistic Vanity Rejuvenating Rosewater Cleanser and the Minimalist Exfoliating Cleansing Milk are excellent choices as rosewater promotes skin elasticity while Minimalist’s Exfoliating Cleansing Milk works to reduce bumpy and leathery skin texture by gently exfoliating the skin. In addition to using the right products, a series of treatments like the Sea Salt Microdermabrasion treatments combined with LED treatments will also help improve skin texture.
Rosacea and Chronic Redness
Once again, inflammation and dehydration are to blame for this common skin problem: rosacea and chronic redness. Rosacea and chronic redness often start as internal ailments that slowly work their way onto the skin’s surface as the condition worsens. To treat it, try a cooling and anti-inflammatory skincare routine as well as follow an anti-inflammatory diet and lifestyle. To learn more about the causes of rosacea and chronic redness, click here. The Holistic Vanity Rosacea Care line is a great topical way to treat skin with this condition as the products have been formulated specifically to repair and soothe inflamed skin, which are the initial steps to healing sun-damaged, rosacea-prone skin. Facials such as the Super-Hydrating Facial can also work to restore skin to its natural beauty.
