Collagen – The Game Changer
It really seems to be the ‘in thing’ right now. And it’s everywhere! It’s a filler, it’s a skin care product, it’s even a drink!!! Yup, collagen has really become the ‘go-to guy’ for just about everything under the sun. But what is it?! What can it do for you?
Well, the word collagen is actually a greek one. The name collagen comes from kolla meaning glue and the suffix -gen denoting producing. It’s the main component of connective tissue and is the most abundant protein in mammals, making up approximately 25% to 35% of the whole-body protein content. When that happens, the natural fibers (or ‘glue’) begin to weaken and the skin gets drier. As this process begins, the ‘glue’ dissipates and the skin begins to sag and crease – much like the spine of a book. The more collagen we lose, the drier and weaker the skin gets; and the more we use our faces to express thought and/or feeling, the deeper and more permanent the creases become.
